Overnight on a Boat

EndedFox Chapel Marina

Service Description

The Overnight Trip is the fourth phase of SeaKing Asylum’s therapeutic sailing program, offering children with autism and their families an extended experience on the water. This step allows participants to spend an evening and night aboard the vessel, fostering a deeper connection to the therapeutic environment and providing a more immersive experience. Key Features of the Overnight Trip: 1. Extended Time on the Water: The Overnight Trip begins with a short day sail, followed by an opportunity to anchor or moor in a calm, safe harbor where families spend the night aboard the vessel. This extended time at sea provides more opportunities for children to benefit from the calming and soothing effects of the water, both during the day and at night. 2. Real-Life Application of Skills: Building on the skills and confidence gained during the Participatory Day Sail, children are encouraged to continue assisting with sailing tasks, such as: • Anchoring the boat for the night • Navigating to a safe harbor • Setting up the vessel for evening routines This real-life application of sailing skills deepens their engagement and enhances their sense of accomplishment and independence. 3. Evening and Nighttime Routines: The overnight experience provides families the chance to settle into the evening routines aboard the boat, such as preparing and sharing a meal, watching the sunset, and getting ready for bed. These predictable, structured routines create a calming atmosphere and help children feel safe and secure. 4. Promoting Relaxation and Sleep: The gentle motion of the water and the peaceful surroundings of the sea create a natural environment that promotes relaxation and can improve sleep quality for children who may struggle with sleep disorders or sensory sensitivities. The quiet, rhythmic sounds of the boat at anchor provide a sensory-friendly atmosphere that encourages restful sleep. 5. Family Bonding and Emotional Connection: The overnight stay allows for uninterrupted family time in a unique setting, where families can bond and create lasting memories together. This shared experience strengthens relationships and helps families grow closer while learning how to better support their child’s needs in a peaceful environment. 6. Building Long-Term Confidence and Resilience: Spending the night aboard the vessel is a significant milestone for many children, helping them build confidence in their ability to adapt to new environments and situations.
