Short Out-and-Back Sail

EndedFox Chapel Marina

Service Description

The Short Out-and-Back Sail is the second phase of SeaKing Asylum’s therapeutic sailing program, designed to build on the comfort and confidence developed during the Boarding Party phase. In this step, families take part in a brief sailing experience, allowing children with autism to engage with the sailing process in a structured, low-pressure setting. Key Features of the Short Out-and-Back Sail: 1. A Gentle Introduction to Sailing: This phase involves a short sailing trip of about three hours, providing a taste of the open water experience. The brief duration ensures that children are not overwhelmed, while still allowing them to feel the motion of the boat and experience life on the water. 2. Participation and Engagement: During this sail, children and their families are gently introduced to basic sailing tasks, such as observing how the sails are raised or taking a turn at the helm under supervision. This hands-on engagement fosters social interaction and helps build confidence and focus in a real-world setting. 3. Reinforcing Routine and Structure: The sailing trip is structured with clear, predictable routines, which are crucial for children with autism. This ensures that children feel secure and can anticipate what comes next, reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of calm. 4. Calming and Sensory Experience: The soothing motion of the boat, the fresh sea air, and the tranquil sound of the water create a natural sensory-friendly environment. Children can begin to experience the calming effects of being at sea, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. 5. Building Confidence for Longer Sails: For families who respond well to this phase, the Short Out-and-Back Sail serves as a stepping stone to longer, more immersive experiences, such as a full day sail or even an overnight trip. It allows children to build confidence in their ability to cope with and enjoy the sailing environment. The Short Out-and-Back Sail is designed to gently push the boundaries of comfort while ensuring a supportive, structured environment. It’s a key step in helping children and their families connect with the therapeutic benefits of sailing, and prepares them for more extended and interactive experiences on the water.
