Step 1: Boarding Party
The Boarding Party Outreach Step
Service Description
The Boarding Party Outreach Step is the first phase of SeaKing Asylum’s therapeutic sailing program, designed to introduce families to the unique benefits of sailing for children with autism in a safe and supportive environment. Key Features of the Boarding Party Outreach: 1. Introduction to the Maritime Environment: Families are invited to come aboard the vessel while it is securely docked. This gives children the chance to explore the boat, get comfortable with their surroundings, and experience the calming effects of being on the water without the added challenge of sailing. 2. Sensory-Friendly Exploration: This phase is designed with sensory sensitivities in mind. The calm, stationary setting of the docked boat allows children to explore at their own pace, feel the gentle sway of the boat, and engage with their environment in a way that minimizes sensory overload. 3. Building Comfort and Trust: The goal of this step is to help children feel safe and secure in this new setting. Families are given time to bond in this unique space, laying the groundwork for further experiences on the water. 4. Positive Social Interaction: The Boarding Party encourages family bonding and gentle interactions with the crew, allowing children to ease into new social dynamics while gaining confidence in a maritime setting. 5. Assessment for Next Steps: Families who respond well to this initial phase are invited to participate in the next steps, such as short out-and-back sails. This gradual introduction helps ensure that children are ready and comfortable for more interactive and extended sailing experiences. The Boarding Party serves as a gentle, welcoming introduction to the world of therapeutic sailing, setting the stage for deeper engagement and greater therapeutic benefits in later phases.
